2) Quanto menos industrializados, melhor.

Simples assim.

3) Esteja preparado.

Philosophy

Eight principles that guide me in nutrition

1) Enough with the myths and radicalism.

It’s time to stop worrying your mind with endless calculations of calories and crazy diets, which only stress the body and cause rebound effects. It’s also time to stop the endless search for the miracle pill, because the truth is: it does not exist! It is time to begin to invigorate your body with the simple habit of eating real and whole food, with the pleasure and consciousness of what is good for YOU.

2) The less processed, the better.

Simple as that. Most packaged foods are made in order to have an extended shelf life and to keep the product marketable. However to achieve this, many chemical additives and artificial ingredients are included. These additives can increase allergic and inflammatory processes and cause an imbalance within the body. To make things worse, many nutritional ingredient labels are purposefully deceiving, confusing buyers with unpronounceable or endless lists of ingredients. Remember: the fewer ingredients there are in a product label, the better.

3) Be prepared.

Your pantry and refrigerator should be packed with healthy ingredients that are good for a quick meal or when that ‘all you want is to eat anything’ moment strikes! Having foods that are both convenient and healthy “anything” options will help you maintain a healthy routine and reduce dietary setbacks. (Check my In the Kitchen for some extra tools)

4) Get to Know from Where you Buy your Food.

Track where your food comes from, especially in regards to animal proteins. Animals that are raised by consuming their natural food (i.e. “grass fed” diet for cows), if not subjected to confinement or hormonally injected, are usually high quality proteins. Whenever possible, opt for organic food. Try to shop at local stores or farmers markets, where you can get to know the supplier as well as obtain a variety of real and whole food. It may sound crazy or paranoid to some, but for me, what’s crazier is the unhealthy practices producers will do with animals or other types of foods. These producers focus solely on a profit—meaning what ends up on your table is far from doing your health good. If you need some help to find the closest farmers market near you or where to find whole and sustainable food, check out my simple guide.

5) On The Street.

Going out to eat is extremely common for so many people but it does not mean it has to be unhealthy! There is such a variety of good restaurants that serve healthy options. In recent years, the number of health-conscious consumers has been increasing so much, that the abundance of health-related food establishments is making our lives easier. Try to search for places that offer quality food, with plenty of veggies and legume options, which make you want to enjoy this type of food. Restaurants that care to inform the client about what they are offering, according to different lifestyles or food restrictions, are usually places that uphold a philosophy to promote healthy and whole living, which is amazing in my opinion. See some I like to eat  when dining out.

6) Make Your Own.

You don’t have to be a chef, or anything of the sort, to make your own food. Take chances with the recipes, make your own adjustments and have fun. Nothing is better than homemade food! Besides, it is always the best option to stay healthy as well as saving the pocket.

7) Self Knowledge.

Try to know yourself better, instead of constantly comparing yourself to what others are doing. Everyone has a body that works differently, the idea is to find what works for you. Nowadays the information is very easy to obtain and yet we still end up making wrong choices or trust sources from people that do not possess the know-how on the subject. Look for a professional who carries credentials to advise you on what is needed.

8) Move Yourself.

Search for activities that match up with your personality and allow you to naturally choose a better and healthier lifestyle.  It will also serve as a way to find your moment to disconnect from the worries and stress of daily activities. Physical activities can trigger what I call a Positive Cycle: where you start to feel better about yourself, leading your self-confidence to increase, causing the desire to take even better care of yourself, eat healthier, and so on. It is also a unique opportunity to extend the longevity of relationships as well as fight against diseases without even realizing. I love sports and it has definitely become one of my favorite ways to find happiness and challenges in my life. It is never too late to find something or start moving your body!
